Getting Ready for Pipe Freezing Season! -Brattleboro, VT

When the temperatures start to drop, you're more likely to experience frozen pipes and flooding in your home. However, there are some cost-effective and simple ways to keep your water flowing and your home dry.

  • Keep the heat on!

You should turn on the heat in your home if you are going to be away for a long period of time. It is not necessary to keep the thermostat as high as you would if you were home, but keeping it above 55 F is ideal. Keeping it above this temperature will keep any water in your home from freezing.

  • Keep your garage door closed!

If you have water pipes in your garage, this is especially important. Your garage can get very cold in winter and allowing that cold air in, will only make the chances of a burst frozen pipe higher.

  • Allow the water to drip from a faucet!

Letting the faucet drip will eliminate any pressure build-up, which eventually causes pipes to burst. You should slightly open both taps if a faucet serves hot and cold water. This is a good tip if you are expecting extremely cold temperatures, a drastic change in temperature, and if you are leaving your home unoccupied for a longer period of time.

  • Add extra insulation!

It is possible that some basement, attic, and crawlspace pipes need additional insulation to prevent freezing. Adding a foam rubber or fiberglass sleeve can help increase temperature and prevent freezing.

  • Keep bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors open!

Pipes are often found in cabinets, such as under the sink. Open cabinet doors when temperatures start to drop so the heat from the rest of the house can warm up the pipes. It is especially important if you are expecting extremely cold temperatures, a drastic change in temperature, and if you are leaving your home unoccupied for an extended period of time.

  • Seal up any holes or cracks!

You should seal any openings where pipes rise from the floor and where cold air seeps in. If you can, seal all cracks and gaps from the outside and the inside to ensure an effective seal that will keep your home warm in cold weather but prevent it from freezing.
